Many people are charged $8,000 without any guarantee of securing employment.
This means they can be scammed and charged the money even if, upon arriving
in New Zealand, they fail to get the job they expected.
What is the Quota?
The Quota is an annual system that offers a limited number of places to eligible individuals from Pacific Island nations via a ballot.
Registering does not guarantee selection or approval. If selected, you must meet requirements regarding a job offer and funds for basic living expenses, and then submit a formal application for a work visa.
Access Barriers
Job offer: contract or employer letter (depending on the category and required duration).
Financial support (if applicable): proof of funds or sponsorship, as appropriate.
Health and background: certificates and/or medical examinations, if required by the category.
English: accreditation in accordance with the applicable standard.
What Arthur Anae and Pacific Justice Propose
When a person’s name is drawn from the ballot, they should be issued a 6-month work permit to come to New Zealand and find a job. This would give applicants a fair opportunity to meet the employment requirements of the Quota scheme, instead of being required to secure everything before arrival.
Important Warning
If you stay in New Zealand longer than allowed and you are deported, you may not be able to return to New Zealand.
