The Saddest Year of My Life

1970 was the saddest year of my life. At just 24 years old, I experienced unimaginable loss. On January 13th, my sister Lina, her son Gavin, her husband Henry, my brother Everard, his partner, and other members of my family all perished in a tragic plane crash in Samoa. Later that year, on May 26th, I lost my grandmother Ane—my dad’s mother. Then, on July 5th, my mother Lusi passed away. The two women who shaped my future were taken from me just six weeks apart, and it’s deeply painful that they are not here to see the outcome of how they raised me.
